When St. Paul writes, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,” did he mean the NT as well as the OT books are sufficient for faith and life? Or is the NT unclear and insufficient, so that we need the church’s magisterium to interpret it for us?

Is an infallible interpreter of Scripture (like the pope or Roman church's magisterium) necessary so that everyone knows what to believe? How do Lutherans know that their interpretation of Scripture is correct without such an infallible interpreter?

Most Lutheran churches have, on their sign or on their cornerstone, the initials U.A.C. What does this mean? Is it a relic of days long past or is it something with practical significance for the church today?
Send your questions to atpholycross@gmail.com and we'll answer them as soon as we're able!

What does a Lutheran believe? Get a book of concord from Repristination Press (link below) and a cup of coffee and find out. Every Friday morning Pastor Sullivan will be exploring the Augsburg Confession, the confession of faith for Lutherans and truly catholic Christianity. This is NOT replacing ATP. ATP will still come out on Wednesdays (Lord willing). Find out what we believe and why.
Get your Book of Concord at:

Who is God? Who ISN'T God? How does He reveal Himself to us? Keeping first things first, the confession begins with God.

Continuing our study of the Augsburg Confession. This session finishes up Article I: On God by talking about who God isn't.

Article 2 deals with Original Sin, what is is, what are the results of is, and how the Lord forgives it. This is an foundational article of the faith because if we have an unbiblical view of humanity, everything else will get thrown off kilter.
Grab a cup of coffee and your Book of Concord (yeah you can read it online, but you stare at a computer screen enough as it is). Comments are welcome and follow up questions can be sent to atpholycross@gmail.com

Article III of the Augsburg Confession teaches us about who the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity is, what He does, and how he does it. Questions can be sent to atpholycross@gmail.com and comments can be left below.

This video explores the 4th article of the Augsburg Confession which deals about the justification of the sinner before God. We'll see that there is only one way God justifies sinners, and remember to pay close attention to grammar, especially the tense of verbs.

Continuing our reading of the Augsburg Confession, this episode deals with the Ministry of the Word and Sacraments and its connection to justifying faith that was confessed in article 4.

It's Friday! That means coffee and the Lutheran Confessions! This segment covers Article 6 of the Augsburg Confession concerning New Obedience of the Christian who is justified by faith alone.

Today's episode covers Article 7 of the Augsburg Confession. We're talking about the Church, what it is and what it isn't and where to find it. This article also talks about unity in rites (i.e. what you do and say on Sunday morning).

AC8 fills in the gaps from AC7. Since the church is revealed wherever the Word is purely taught and the Sacraments rightly administered, what does one do with hypocritical members and ministers? Does the ministry of Word and Sacrament derive its efficacy from the man or from Christ's promise? That's the trajectory of today's video

Article 9 of the Augsburg Confession deals with Baptism, its necessity and nature and the great promises God gives us in His sacrament.

AC Article 10 is on today's docket. What is the Lord's Supper? Who receives it? This article is a suitcase. It looks small but there's a lot to unpack.

Many folks (even seasoned Lutherans) have been taught to shun confessing their sins to their pastor in order to receive Christ's Absolution. The Lutheran Church retains that practice. Find out why in today's video.

What do the Scriptures teach about repentance? How often are we to be repenting and what are the parts of Biblical repentance? This episode covers article 12 of the Augsburg Confession.

Today's AC study continues on to Article 13. Now that we've talked about the Sacraments we can talk about the proper use of them and the improper use of them. Thanks for watching!

Article 14 is brief but vitally important to the church and Christ's ministry in His church. Who can preach? Can just anybody decide to take on this important task of Christ? How do we tell who is truly called to preach and who is not called by Christ? We'll see how the Scriptures look at the divine call to preach in today's video.

Every church has ecclesiastical usages, also known as human traditions. Article 15 confesses how we ought to use human traditions in the church and how they are improperly used.

To we explore what the Gospel does to life in the civil realm. Does the Gospel abrogate the civil realm? Does faith mean that you have to disdain the civil sphere and remove yourself from it? Or is the Gospel a matter of the heart, faith, and eternal righteousness?

When Christ returns, what will happen? This article takes a brief (but deep) look at Christ's second advent, what will happen, and what WON'T happen. This article is terribly important to confess rightly in the North American religious scene.

Article 18 tackles the issue of the freedom of the will. Does man have free will in things of this world? What about free will in regards to spiritual things? This is another very important article of the faith, especially for anyone confessing the truth of the Scripture in our modern world.

What is the cause of sin? From whence did evil originate? Today's study of the Augsburg Confession deals with these issues and the ramifications for getting it wrong.

Article 20 deals with Good Works, specially it deals with from where good works come, which is faith, since faith alone justifies.

What does the church do with the saints? On the one side, the Roman church prays to them. On the other side, most of American Protestantism ignores them. As always, the Lutheran position is right in the middle. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to subscribe on Youtube or like us on Facebook!

This episode studies article 22 of the Augsburg Confession. With this article we get into the abuses of the Roman church during the medieval period. AC 22 deals with why Lutherans don't withhold the chalice from the laity in Holy Communion as Rome did, and still do in some places.

Mandatory public celibacy had begun to be enforced in the Roman church some 400 years before the Lutheran Reformation. To this day, the church of Rome does not typically allow its clergy to be married. Article 23 of the Augsburg Confession examines the Scriptural reasons why ministers can be married, and how now man-made vow can override what God has ordained in His revealed Word, the Holy Scriptures.

Article XXIV (24) of the Augsburg Confession deals with the Mass, or as some of us still call it today, the Divine Service, in which God gives the gifts of His Word and the Sacrament to people for the forgiveness of their sins. Sadly, the Roman Church had turned the Mass into something else entirely. We find in this article a pure understanding of Christian worship, the Mass, and the nature of worship in the New Testament. This is a longer article, and a very important one for Christians today, so it will be covered in a few parts.

We're still talking about worship and the role of faith in the Mass in today's continuation of our study of the Augsburg Confession, Article 24, Of The Mass.

This video wraps up our study of AC 24 "Of The Mass," talking about the nature of worship.

It may sound boring, "the distinction of meats" but this article takes what we've already confessed about the righteousness of faith and the proper use of human traditions, and applies them to things like mandatory fasts, fish on Fridays in Lent, days of obligation, basically anything in the church that is deemed "necessary" other than the righteousness of faith. This article also explores WHY we have traditions in the church, which is for the sake of discipline and mortification of the sinful flesh, NOT for the sake of gaining grace, forgiveness, or favor from God.

Article 27 treats Monastic Vows, which were put on the same level as Baptism so that people were led to believe the like of a monk was holier than the life of a Christian in the world, fulfilling his vocations. This is a longer article so once again, we'll be skipping around in the text.

Article 28 deals with the power of Bishops and pastors within the church. What power do they have by divine right, that is, what power is given them in the gospel? What powers aren't they given? This video deals with these questions.

In the modern Lutheran church, Vicars are seminary students under a supervising pastor. Does this arrangement align or violate the Scripture and Lutheran Confessions?
