Mandatory public celibacy had begun to be enforced in the Roman church some 400 years before the Lutheran Reformation. Article 23 of the Augsburg Confession examines the Scriptural reasons why ministers can be married, and how now man-made vow can override what God has ordained in His revealed Word, the Holy Scriptures.

If it doesn't make sense why scholars would do this sort of thing, the answer is simple: they don't think the Scriptures are inspired by God.
